Michalis Florides is a PhD candidate in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Photovoltaic Laboratory, FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy of the University of Cyprus. He graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) with the degree of Electrical and Electronics Engineering MEng Honours (First Class). During his studies, Michalis was awarded three prices for his outstanding performance and a price for the best individual power project (dissertation). In Stage IV of his studies, he undertook a three month Industrial Placement at Sevcon Ltd (UK) and he was offered a job after graduation. He worked for three years as a Development Engineer designing AC and DC motor controllers for battery powered electric vehicles as well as DC/DC Converters. In addition to design, Michalis was doing electrical, electronic and EMC testing/troubleshooting. His current research interest is PV systems focusing on fault detection algorithms, especially, potential induced degradation (PID). Furthermore, his research extends in battery energy storage systems (BESS) for PV and energy management.
