Dr. Charalambos Anastassiou has recently moved back to his home country of Cyprus after studying and working in the USA. After receiving a Fulbright scholarship in 1992, Dr. Anastassiou headed to the University of Iowa where he studied Electrical Engineering and Physics and graduated with highest honors in 1996. Dr. Anastasiou continued his studies at Princeton University in the Electrical Engineering Department focusing on optoelectronics and doing his doctorate thesis on optical spatial solitons. After obtaining his PhD in 2001 he decided to join OmniGuide Inc., a Cambridge Massachusetts optical fiber based start-up company that was spun out of MIT. There he was part of the research team that developed a novel type of surgical fiber system that provides the surgeon with accurate cutting and ablation in minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery. Dr. Anastassiou is an applied scientist at heart, who enjoys seeing academic research getting put to good use in the real world.
